About the What Country Do I Look Like? Traditional Costume AI
The traditional costume AI trend answers "what country do I look like I'm from?" with a picture instead of a word. You upload one photo, the AI makes a guess based on how you look, and you get back a portrait of yourself in that country's full traditional costume, standing in front of its landscape or architecture.
The trend started with a single prompt people pasted into image AIs: "Dress me in the traditional costume of the country I look like I'm from." This template runs that idea on GPT Image 2.5 with a longer, tuned prompt, so the costume is detailed and accurate, the scene matches the country and your face, skin tone, freckles and hair colour stay exactly as they are in your photo.
How to see what country you look like in traditional costume
- Upload one photo of yourself. Choose a clear, well-lit photo of one person with the face fully visible. A front-facing selfie or portrait works best; sunglasses, masks and heavy filters make the guess and the likeness less reliable.
- Generate. Press Generate. The AI picks one country from your appearance, chooses that country's traditional attire for festivals and celebrations, and renders the portrait. It usually takes under a minute.
- Download and share. The finished 3:4 portrait (1536 × 2048) appears in your generations, ready to download and post. Run it again if you want to see another guess.
What country do I look like? How the AI decides
The model looks only at what is visible in your photo, such as your features, colouring and hair, and commits to one specific country rather than a region or a mix. It then builds the whole image around that country: the costume, the jewellery and headwear, and a softly blurred background like a highland loch for Scotland or the Acropolis for Greece.
It is a guess, made for fun. Appearance says nothing certain about where anyone or their family is from, and the result is not a DNA, ancestry or ethnicity test. The same photo can get a different but related country on another run: in our tests the red-haired sample was dressed as Irish on one run and Scottish on the next.
What the AI keeps and what it changes
- Kept from your photo: your face and facial features, skin tone, freckles and moles, eye colour, age, build and expression, and your own hair colour and texture.
- Changed: your clothes become the country's full traditional costume, with the headwear, jewellery and accessories that belong to it. Your hair may be styled or covered the way that costume is traditionally worn.
- Added: a setting from the same country, soft natural daylight and an editorial portrait framing from the waist or knees up.
- Never added: text, captions, flags or watermarks. The costume is shown respectfully and worn fully, not as a party costume or caricature.
Examples of traditional costumes the AI chooses
The sample on this page is a red-haired woman dressed in Scottish Highland dress: a tartan skirt and sash, velvet bodice, lace blouse, feathered bonnet and sporran, in front of a castle on a loch. A bearded man in our tests was dressed as a Greek Evzone, with the white pleated fustanella, embroidered vest, sash and red tasselled fez, below the Acropolis. Another test portrait got a Moroccan velvet kaftan with a gold belt and veil, in a tiled riad courtyard.
The costume follows the person: a woman gets the women's costume of the country and a man gets the men's.
Tips for the best result
- Use one person per photo. With several people it is unclear whose look should decide the country.
- Pick a sharp photo with even light and your face clearly visible, not covered by sunglasses, a mask or a hat.
- Avoid heavy beauty filters: the guess and the likeness both come from your real features.
- Curious about other guesses? Run the same photo again, or try a different photo of yourself.
- Only upload photos of yourself or of people who have agreed to it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the traditional costume AI trend?
A viral trend where people ask an AI to "dress me in the traditional costume of the country I look like I'm from". The AI guesses a country from the photo and returns a portrait of the same person in that country's traditional dress.
Can AI tell what country I'm from?
No. It only guesses from how you look in the photo, and appearance doesn't reveal where you or your family are from. Treat the result as a fun guess, not a fact about your ancestry, ethnicity or nationality.
Which AI model does this use?
OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 (the Sunburst version), at high quality and 2K resolution.
Will it still look like me?
Yes. The prompt locks your face, skin tone, freckles, eye colour, age and hair colour, and only changes your clothes, styling and background. A clear, front-facing photo gives the closest likeness.
Why did I get a different country the second time?
Each run is a new guess, so a photo that sits between neighbouring countries can land on either one. Generate again to see other results.
Can I choose the country myself?
Not in this template: the point of the trend is that the AI picks. You get one country per image.
How long does it take and what size is the image?
Usually under a minute. The result is a 3:4 portrait JPEG at 1536 × 2048 pixels.
How many credits does it cost?
57 credits per image, charged when the generation starts.
What happens if my generation fails?
The error is shown on your generation, and the credits for that image are returned to your balance automatically.
